TRAINS – The URBAN UPDATE

Jamie 11/28/2025

The Urban Update is the biggest expansion TRAINS has ever received!

Transforming the way railways can be built inside cities, metros, theme parks, and sprawling industrial yards. With a focus on realism and creativity, this update introduces new locomotives, new systems, and new building tools that make urban rail networks feel alive in a way they never have before.

At the heart of the update is a brand new generation of rolling stock. Subway locomotives and subway cars let players build fast underground metro lines. Trams bring street running and compact surface transit into city centers. The Winged Steam Engine and the Mid-cab Diesel add more personality and power to your fleet. Rollercoaster engines and cars let you design wild amusement park routes that break every rule of traditional railway design.

To support these machines, the update brings new track types and utility blocks that expand what your railway can do. Turntables allow precise alignment and full directional rotation. Cross tracks make it possible for lines to intersect cleanly through busy city blocks. Chime markers, horn markers, and updated station markers add full control over movement, sound, announcements, and station behaviour. With these tools you can build complex metro hubs, themed takes on classic railways, or futuristic automated systems.

One of the most powerful additions is the Drill Attachment. This converts a diesel engine into a true tunnel boring machine that mines blocks, places track, fills gaps in the walls, and lights your tunnel automatically. When combined with experimental chunk loading, you can even let the drill carve huge underground networks while you work somewhere else.

The Urban Update also introduces an extensive set of decorative blocks. Subway tiles and tunnel trims give underground spaces a clean modern look. Turnstiles, tickets, and the Universal Train Pass add a fully featured fare system for stations.

Every part of the update is designed to support more detailed city builds, smoother automation, and deeper creative expression. Whether you are designing a full metro network, a vintage tramway, or a massive underground freight corridor, the Urban Update gives you the tools to bring those ideas to life.

Alongside all these new additions, there are major performance improvements across the entire addon. One of the biggest behind the scenes changes affects how curved tracks are processed. This change greatly improves performance on consoles and lower end devices. However, it does mean that curved tracks in existing worlds may appear broken and will need to be replaced, you can read more about that, here.
